Bobby Hull Hockey Shooting & Scoring [VHS]ReviewsMy son is 13 and plays in Los Angeles for his midget AAA team. He has easily watched this dvd 50 times to the point I feel as if I know Bobby Hull Jr! His voice comes out of my son's room every weekend! That would be annoying to most parents but my son has been scoring alot more goals and has even trying to explain to me the mechanics of scoring goals like Brett Hull. He was going to spend more time skateboarding and playing football but since he has improved so much at hockey and enjoying it more he really wants to pursue it further. Thank you Bobby Hull! This video was excellent from beginning to end. A great instructional video for adults and kids alike. It gives you tons of detail to help improve all your shots. First half of this 35 minute video is full of Brett Hull demonstrating and clearly explaining his technique in the wrist shot, snap shot, professional snap shot, one-timer, slap shot, backhand, as well as fakes and dekes. Outstanding repetition and slow motion footage. Second half of tape focuses on shooting drills and is a must watch for every youth hockey or high school hockey coach. Brett and Bobby Jr. do an excellent job together in this video. Several cameos of dear old Dad...Bobby Hull, Sr. A must for every player and hockey Dad! Brett Hull is one of the fiercest scorers in the NHL today, so it is appropriate that he's brother puts out an instructional tape on shooting and scoring using Brett for examples. Bobby Hull, Jr. actually does pretty well in front of the camera in his explanations of the shooting techniques so this video doesn't come across as cheesy. This video deals in teaching the wrist-shot, backhand, snap-shot and slap shot, and how each shot basically builds on the one before it. Bobby does well explaining the position of the body and puck for each shot. He stresses the importance of the drive off the back leg and the follow through of the stick towards the target. One of the hints that Bobby gives is not to look to see where the goalie is, but where he isn't. In essence, shoot for the empty part of the net instead of trying to shoot around the goalie. Finally, the Hulls' end with on-ice drills to improve your shooting technique. The reason that I purchased the video was to learn how to transfer my weight through the stick to give more power to my shot. Bobby goes over this very briefly during the slap-shot segment and only shows this as a still shot of Brett's stick bending in a large arc. Unfortunately, this wasn't helpful to me, and I could have used a little more explanation to get this very important technique correct. The only way to get better at shooting is to shoot as much as you can. This tape will help make sure that you have the right form and are performing all the components of a shot the correct way. The Hulls' close by stating that you should be taking 200 shots a week to improve. With limited ice time for adult recreational leagues, 200 is a tough number unless you're shooting off the ice. This video repetitively shows all of the classic shot types in full speed, slow motion, different views, in different ways, in a professional and entertaining way. It also contains many good tips on shooting and scoring. I highly recommend it. I plan to view portions of it over and over again, working on one shot type at a time at the rink. Red Alert - Hockeytown 3 - 2002 Stanley Cup Champion Detroit Red Wings [VHS]ReviewsI can't claim to be dyed-in-the-wool Red Wings fan, but every so often they do the world a service by knocking the Colorado Avalanche out of the playoffs, and any hockey fan has to acknowledge the brilliance of Scotty Bowman, the team's overall depth and the pure eternal class that is Steve Yzerman.Having said that, I won this DVD on a bet with my dad over the outcome of the 2002 Western Conference Finals. I was in the process of moving the night of Game 7 and had no idea of the score until I was able to check the internet via my cellphone. When I saw 6-0 I couldn't believe it...eventually they tacked on the extra point and won 7-0. My dad thought I was bull$h!tting him when I called him with the score, and my 'Lanche-supporting friends could only take solace that as bad as that defeat was, Saudi Arabia's 8-0 loss to Germany in the World Cup the next day was far worse.Having said all that, the 2002 Stanley Cup Finals were an anticlimax as has been the case over the last several years. One all-powerful team makes it, and a quality opponenet from the othe other conference simply isn't to be found. As this DVD is designed to chronicle the highlights of the season, it would have been better if more attention and screentime was given to the Conference Finals (the series which truly decided the Stanley Cup; no hockey fan could doubt that). I wouldn't have minded an extra feature on the 2002 Olympic ice hockey tournament either, as the Wings had so many players involved. I guess that would have been stepping on the IOC's turf, though.Anyway, it's a decent enough tribute to a truly amazing star-studded team...the interviews with the players, the preseason moves to put together a living Hall Of Fame team on ice, all of this is well-documented. A team this talented may never be assembled (or bought) in this fashion again. But the highlights just aren't as awe-inspiring as the team's actual accomplishment. The NHL owes a team this good something more, don't they? ...can appreciate this, but only if they are a true hocky fan. W may never see a team like this again - made up of at least 9 potential HOFers and the greatest coach of all time. Tuff to swallow my pride? Yes. Great to watch? You bet. Being a huge Detroit Red Wings fan (and for good reason-they're the best ever!) This was an awesome video! If you love hockey (or even if you don't) by the time you are through watching, you'll be a lifelong devoted fan of Stevie Y and the fabulous Stanley Cup Champion Detroit Red Wings! GO WINGS! This video is entertaining as it is hockey and the Stanley Cup playoffs but it is ridiculous that the Red Wings won the Stanley Cup yet again. The Carolina Hurricanes played their hearts out throughout the playoffs and regular season despite ridicule by every other team and nearly every sports commentator and journalist. Nobody took them seriously at all even after they won the Eastern Conference Championship. Hopefully, they'll show that they can go all the way next season. As it stands, don't get this dvd and instead the get the Carolina Hurricanes dvd "THIS Is Championship Hockey". It's great! This could have been a great DVD. It was the first championship video to be released on the DVD format. The actual film was good, although it could have been longer. They could have included more of the earlier rounds and the reg. season instead of dedicating half of the video to the actual finals alone. The extras were also lame. The stats are available anywhere on the internet and the Lidstrom feature was very short. The Hasek feature was just the NHL coolshots special about Czech players going home for the summer.Hopefully in the future they will include much more features such as the closing ceremonies, photo gallery, more insider cameras at practices etc, and multiple camera angles.I still like it though, I'm a Wings fan after all;-) Average Rating:![]() |

Brett & Bobby Hull's Instructional Shooting & Scoring DVD 2.0ReviewsI think this covers all the types of hockey shots that I was trying to learn. I think it's detailed and has lots of explanation on the technique. I think it was great that Brett Hull was on the video and he demonstrated many of the shots. I don't think I'll ever need another shooting instruction product. As a new skater and 41 year old novice at the game of hockey, I wanted a dvd that would help me better understand how to handle a stick, shoot and score. I wanted something that would teach me by showing me what to do. This dvd did not disappoint. The delivery of the Hull's was excellent. The highlight clips throughout demonstrating shots from their respective careers was also a nice touch inspiring hope that I may aspire to! The camera angles were also great and the limited graphics were a nice plus. They did a really nice job of teaching and then demonstrating the skills involved with each technique. The only thing I would want added to make this a 10 would be more instruction on the positions of your body, hands and feet. More slow motion shoots demonstrating the transfer of body weight and the proper position and rotation of hands and wrist. Multiple camera angles of the same shop might also help. If you are already familiar with skating, hockey and shooting then you will gain a lot of insight from this as you may not need as much as instruction as I do. When the go into the more advanced shooting then you will certainly gain more. Overall, I would highly recommend this dvd to anyone who is trying to improve and learn better shooting technique. I liked Brett as a NHL player a lot so I was very pleased to see that he participated in this great instructional DVD. I don't know the first version that must already have been a sucess, but the current version leaves very litte room for improvement. I play hockey for about 15 years now but the DVD still taught me a number of things I didn't explicitly know yet. Believe it or not, just today I watched the section about slapshots in preparation for a game that night, and in the game I shot the cleanest top shelf slap shot goal that ever came of my blade. Could of course be coincidence, but I sure don't regret watching the DVD. The only downside in my eyes is the playtime that passes very quickly. I'm sure they would have managed to fill twice the time, but maybe they are working on another DVD about other techniques. My vote: Go get it, it's worth it. Cheers from World Championships Host 2010 Germany Thor Great video to explain different shots in hockey. Some tips I picked up that really helped. Just great review too. I do like this video a lot. It covers all the shots possible and is very helpful. However, some of the audio is rather poor, e.g. when they are demonstrating the technique, the audio of Bobby and Brett talking fades out as they skate around and I've had to turn the volume way up to hear it. I also think they forgot to mention a couple of things, e.g. look up on the slapshot once you strike the ice. Overall though, very good. The audio has a few issues here or there but it's totally worth 20 bucks... Average Rating:![]() |

Brett: His Own StoryReviewsThis is probably the most enjoyable book I have read regarding hockey or hockey players. Brett provides a light-hearted look at his life that is neither boastful nor "preachy". He is surprisingly modest given the extraordinary career he has had. I particularly enjoyed hearing of his days growing up in the shadow of his legendary dad and how he overcame his own personal obstacles. This book could easily have been two or three times as thick but I am guessing Brett would not have enjoyed writing a lengthy tome - and clearly Brett is motivated by fun more than anything else! A great lesson for anyone! Brett Hull was a great hockey player. He worked very hard to become a star player. It was very hard growing up the son of a famous hockey player, especailly after his parents divorced. I think Brett Hull will be remembered and admired for his goal scoring and records he set on the ice. After reading this book I will remember him for how hard he works and how he never gave up his dream. I would recommend this book top everyone that is a hockey lover. I enjoyed the book and was happy I chose it. THIS IS THE STORY OF BRETT HULL IN HIS OWN WORDS. I REALLY LIKED THIS BOOK. BRETT DOES A NICE JOB DESCRIBING HIS CAREER, RELATIONSHIP WITH HIS DIVORCED PARENTS, AND HIS THOUGHTS ON BEING HIMSELF. BRETT FINALLY PLAYED ON A STANLEY CUP WINNER IN 1999. HE TELLS OF ALL THE PLAYOFF DEFEATS AND THE FRUSTRATIONS DURING HIS CAREER. HE ADDS HUMOR, HONESTY, AND ALOT OF INSIGHTS ON THE GAME OF HOCKEY. I RECOMMEND THIS TO ALL HOCKEY FANS AS A GOOD READ. This is a great book, all of you brett hull fans or not, should go and get this book, it is definetily the best book i've ever read in a long time Average Rating:![]() |

In a frank and revealing autobiography, NHL goal setter Brett Hull tells what it has been like growing up in the shadow of his famous father Bobby. A pudgy, reluctant athlete when he was young, Brett's career flagged at first, but finally Brett rallied to become one of hockey's elite performers. |

The Top 60 Since 1967 (The Hockey News)ReviewsI'm returning this book as "defective". They have the audacity to not correct their error from 10 years ago when they put Bobby Orr as second. He is second to NONE. Saying it is a matter of opinion of who is #1 is like saying it's a matter of opinion who the best singer is - Frank Sinatra or Britney Spears? Or the best guitarist - Jimi Hendrix or Steve Miller. It's not opinion, it's OBVIOUS if you watch and listen instead of just looking at a page of statistics. I bought the book on the off chance that they corrected their error. They didn't, so the book goes back! : ) Average Rating:![]() |
