I expected a little more action. I tend to think of mariachi and I got village pan pipes.

I bought this CD at a stoop sale for one dollar, and then sold it at a stoop sale for a dollar or two. I am very glad that I did not pay full price (or even half price) for it. I did not think it was a bad CD, but a bland CD. Every track on it I have heard performed better elsewhere. They are like Muzak versions of great Latin works.

Keith Lockhart, the Boston Pops, and the guest artists have a hit in this one! I can almost forget the snow outside when I listen to it. I loved "Jalousie!" And Mariachi Cobre stands out on "Granada" and "Son de la Negra." Five star tracks, both of them, with Steve Carrillo's great vocal work on "Granada" and the spirited interchange between the Pops and Mariachi Cobre's brass sections in "Son de la Negra." Purists may object to the combination of Latin music and an orchestra, but I think it's a treat!

The Boston Pops due a great job on this CD. I really like Batuque. If you are looking for a great CD that will really make you dance this is the one.

Where's the authentic Mariachi CDs? Let's have some of the real stuff! Anyone know where I can find some? LibbyBuckland@email.msn.com

Gargoyles the Movie [VHS] Gargoyles the Movie [VHS]

Reviews

I am not giving the movie 5 stars, but the series. I have seen the movie and I agree with most, it is too fast-paced due to scene cuts. However, the entire series, as you have probably gathered from others already, has one of the most developed storyline, plot and characters of any animation. I began watching the series when it first aired and loved it. Even more, my mom loved it, too, and she is not a cartoon person. Both of us looked high and low for it after it was canceled, but were unable to find it until we recently discovered that it aired on Toon Disney. That was an ecstatic day in our household. I am now 17 and love it even more, especially now that I can appreciate its subtler plot points. I can only hope that they will put the series out on DVD soon. I will HIGHLY recommend it when they do. By the way, I used the under 13 review because I do not like giving out all of my personal information just to review a great series.

Now I marked this 5 stars but in reality I'd give the tape itself about 3. Let me first say that Gargoyles is a beautifully animated serise with a very good and well written story. It's a bit like batman accept more interesting. I wish Disney would promote this a bit more now by giving it a special DVD release or a theatrical movie. Now the only thing keeping this from 5 stars is the fact that this isn't actually a movie. This is merely the first 5 episodes you saw on T.V. with less footage. The end result is a story that's too fast paced and unbalenced. I wish they had actually made a movie or used all of the footage rather than just cutting the footage up. Some very entertaining scenes have been cut. One of which is a very funny scene where the Gargoyles see a kitchen for the first time and mess it up. I believe the scenes were cut to make room for the game at the end of the tape which was completley worthless. I still however recomend this movie because the story is so interesting as is the rest of the series. I would really like to see this on DVD digitally remastered and with the cut scenes restored so that the true beauty of this series can be realized.

This video is actually the first three episodes of the first season in the "Gargoyles" saga and let me say that this was and still is a really breathtaking three part video of the greatest cartoon series that Disney has ever created. Forget "Rescue Rangers", "Darkwing Duck" and even "Goof Troop", those are great cartoon series but "Gargoyles" to me throws all of those right into orbit around the earth in every category. This series took Disney by storm with a very deep and mystical storyline that blended the fantasy folklore of gargoyles and merged fantasy with real-life history in the series timeline. In this episode entitled "The Awakening" the Gargoyles exist as a clan in Castle Wyvern in northern Scotland where they co-existed quite well, if a bit on the shakily, with humanity in the castle and protected the citizens from rule-breakers and/or enemy armies who would attack them. The Clan is lead by a young but extremely strong gargoyle named Goliath along with his second in command, his mate Demona. The clan however are attacked by a huge Viking army one night in the year A.D. 994 and most of the original clan are destroyed and only seven of them survive the horrible attack that night. During a botch spell attack, the clan are put into a stone sleep with a spell that won't be broken until the 'castle rises above the clouds' and only then would the gargoyles be reawakened from their stone sleep. A multi-billionaire businessman named David Xanatos retrieves the castle by disassembling it and transports the gargoyles in their stone forms to atop his headquarters which dwarves every other building in New York City. The spell is broken and the Gargoyles awaken to a totally different world from the one they remembered from a whole millenium before. The Gargoyles clan are no safer in their new world than they were in their old world from a millenia before then. Humans are unaware of their existance and there's the danger of what humans may do if they encounter a gargoyle. Would they be met with caution or shunned with hate and hostility? The Gargoyles will be learning a lot that the modern world is full of enemies even more formidable than the ones from a millenium ago and some of them come from unlikely places too. This show is to me the greatest achievement that Disney Studios has ever accomplished even today. The Animation is absolutely stunning and original like nothing I had ever seen up to this point in my life. The animation alone isn't the best thing about the series. As it is now as a grown up, the best thing about "Gargoyles" is it's absolutely powerful message of what prejudice and bigoty may lead to if not dealt with by the heros of the world. The "X-Men" cartoon series from the 1990s is another cartoon series that sheds light on this. It's absolutely a tragedy that this show lasted only a little over two years before the show was cancelled because of the third season. Just about every other Disney Cartoon series after this one seem to revert back into forgettable generic pap with little memorability and predictable animation and bland figures. This VHS edition of the gargoyles "Awakening Parts I, II, and III" is rather dissapointing in some ways. If you have seen the TV series counterpart, you will notice that the VHS edition leaves out several crucial scenes. The picture quality is also rather questionable but that may have to do with a degraded copy I got from a store a while back. The game at the ending is almost useless and almost nothing but clutter to me. It's a great thing that at least some of the Gargoyles episodes are available on VHS but I feel that this whole series should be released onto two DVD Box Sets. One should containing all 78 episodes of "Gargoyles" three seasons including "The Goliath Chronicles" and the other should just have the first two seasons for those who disliked the third season. They should also release the three seasons separately on DVD because the picture quality of the VHS editions of the available videos is desperately calling for a picture remastering! ]I give this video a five star any just because this is a great cartoon series. There will never be a cartoon series that impacted cartoon watching the way "Gargoyles" did and it's a shame that cartoon studios have never tried to create something as powerful and rich like "Gargoyles" or "X-men" from the 1990s and instead reverted back into predictable and forgettable animation and bland picture cartoon quality.

What I thought was coolest about the movie Gargoyles was that the gargoyles are stone during the day but at night the stone breaks away and they turn into real monsters. The good thing is, all the gargoyles are nice, except one, but they keep it a secret until the end of the movie. The thing about this movie--there's a lot of shooting in it, and people are getting hurt a lot, but it's still a really cool movie and I suggest that anyone who wants to get it get it.

i don't have this video but, i have loved this series since i was young....im 13 now.....i even still watch it! I REALLY wish they would make a video(VHS or DVD) for the 3 episodes "Hunters Moon part 1&2&3" it was when Alisa first kisses Goliath and they both confess their love! I would absolutely die if they made videos for those episodes!

Entertaining Angels: Dorothy Day Story [VHS] Entertaining Angels: Dorothy Day Story [VHS]

This video portrayed the life of Dorothy Day, a remarkable woman, who with her passion for Christ started the Catholic Worker movement. A special movie... One that is not at all light-hearted, but one that will challenge you and make you think differently about the value of human dignity. If you are in the mood for something different, a movie that will bring you closer to your own faith, I recommend this one. It made me reevaluate my priorities.

I am a Catholic Worker--this movie was only a shadow of the intensity and power of the real thing. You don't have to be Catholic. You have to love people with an intensity that can only come from one place. It's a hard life in the film and it's unimaginably difficult in person. I ask you find the film and then find a Worker House and share in the struggle.

This video was an introduction, for me, to Dorothy Day, and the whole Catholic Worker movement, as it was begun. It made me want to know more (even though I am not a Catholic)! The acting was quite well done, and Moira Kelly was convincing as a passionate Dorothy Day. It is worth sharing, as it is quite an incredible story of faith and history.

After watching this movie, it touches my heart, it make us realize how sometimes we walk the wrong path and just simply blame it on God. It has teaches us how to hold on to our faith, think and how things affects us. We need to be real christian. We have to shown our love and really care. That's when we truely accept Christ into our heart.

Ghostwriter: Ghost Story [VHS] Ghostwriter: Ghost Story [VHS]

Reviews

In a world awash with unimaginative children's programming, inappropriate dialog, and overly disciplined rules, one show stood out above the rest. "Ghostwriter" fans will always remember the diverse team of kids who ran around Brooklyn cracking codes and solving mysteries. Some people have teased the show for its early 90's look of colorful outfits, trendy headgear, mild rap music, and brief introduction to the internet. But the show didn't reek of ignorance like some programs of today. The kids were hip in their time but the messages are timeless. While the Ghostwriter team worked on solving mysteries, they also learned about environmentalism, drug abuse, violence, war remembrance, and family feuds. So who IS Ghostwriter? We don't know. In this pilot episode, a ghost suddenly pops out of a book in the basement of 12-year-old Jamal Jenkins. He's depicted as a bubble that floats around the screen before diving into books or a computer. Ghostwriter cannot hear or talk. It takes Jamal and his friend Lenni Frazer a few tries until they realize he can only communicate through words. Ghostwriter doesn't remember who he is or where he came from but he does want to "protect the children". The enigma surrounding Ghostwriter never went away but the idea of a word-searching ghost caught on. Because Ghostwriter can move from afar, he's able to transmit clues and tips back to the team and their notebooks. This show was intended to teach reading and writing skills but the idea of New York smart kids with a word-tracking ghost for an ally gave the stories a unique feeling that was different from "Nancy Drew", "Hardy Boys", or even "Scooby Doo". The pilot mystery is about the origins of Ghostwriter, the team, and their first mystery. When Gaby Fernandez is walking to school one day, her bag is stolen by a stranger in a two-headed mask. She's only one of many kids who have had been robbed lately, all in the same manner. Jamal finds a coded message and a button with the word THABTO as his only clues. His friend Alex, Gaby's older brother, tries to help him crack the code. Together, Jamal, Lenni, Alex, and Gaby team up to discover the true identity of the backpack thieves. There's something wonderful, almost magical, about watching the story through the wide-eyed children. They're all a bit frightened by Ghostwriter at first but gradually, they learn to accept his help in solving the mystery. From Lenni's affection in hugging the computer screen to Gaby's shriek when she finds the message on her wall ("Gaby thirsts for knowledge?" "Yeah! It means she always wants to know stuff.") to Jamal's modest but heroic actions to Alex's daring plan to infiltrate the THABTO meeting, each of them shines with his or her special qualities. We sympathize with Jamal who feels a letdown when the case ends. Then he rallies everybody together at his house and suggests they continue working as detectives. The Ghostwriter team is officially initiated. After all, it's never the end of an adventure. It's only the start of a new one. Whether you're showing this video to a younger generation of kids or reliving old memories ("old" meaning you watched this in elementary or middle school) you'll be glad you knew about "Ghostwriter".

I don't really own this particular product, but I would really LOVE to find this series on DVD!!! I read in one of these reviews that there are ones out there, but WHERE?!?!? Help me! I'd like them ALL!!!

The DVD is amazing. I've watched episodes from "Who Burned Down Brinker's Store" to "The Slime Monster" each day for the past three months and have yet to get sick of them. Sure enough, I haven't been doing my homework (I'm getting a D in geometry :) ) but my sleuthing skills have increased tenfold. Anyway this message is just to touch base with all you other Ghostwriter youngster fans. Unbelievable? Believe it. -Sally

I have been a gargoyles fan for years but was not aware until recently that the TV series had been released on dvd. After purchasing Season 1 and 2, we must do whatever is necessary to get Disney to release the remaining episodes. This animated legacy must be completed and we the fans must stay on Disney until it is done.

This show is excellent with great writters, voice actors and animators and back ground music. If you want to watch something enjoyable then watch this. I love all the characters, but Brookly is my favorite and Demona is a classic villan who you can really enjoy. I can't say enough about this set. The extra features aren't bad either. The only reason I don't give it a perfect rating is I don't think it's as good as season two which is really were the show starts to really pick up steam.

this is one of the greatest series, along with batman: the animated series (a clear influence in the gargoyles series). the episodes are great; the extras area great; the dvd set arrived in perfect condition. thank you!

As a middle schooler, I would run home from the bus and turn on the TV to watch Gargoyles religiously and repeatedly. Rewatching the series as an adult allows me to acknowledge the fact that this show is superior to any other cartoon show. The themes of family, friendship, tolerance, duty, honor, etc. are prevalent on this show and the stories are incredibly compelling. The lessons this show taught kids - too much TV is never a good thing, respect your elders, etc. are timeless. Even with Pixar's incredible animation, Gargoyles is able to compete with their hand drawn, 2-D illustrations - the drawings are just that good. This is an incredible show and a must-see for adults even more so than for children.

I got this complete first season of Gargoyles for Christmas...was the best gift I ever recieved. Made my whole day...heck my whole year and years to come. Just bought the 2nd season vol 1...waiting anxiously for the rest of the series to COME OUT!!! This show is AMAZING...I still can't get enough of it!!!

Saw It,Didn't Like It.Reminded Me of The Movie,(Unlawful Entry)With Kurt Russell And Ray Liotta,Which Was Far Better Than This.

One of my favorites. Have watched it time and time again. I love Samuel L. Jackson

What a well made, exciting, action-packed suspense Lakeview Terrace is! This movie completely lives up to the hype, and THEN some. Any time I watch a thriller of *this* magnitude, I can't help but smile when the film is over and just sit back, reflect, and appreciate all the time and effort that was put into it. It also helps that Samuel L. Jackson completely nails his role as the troublesome neighbor. Every time he speaks, you're always waiting for something rude to come out of his mouth, or getting ready to hear something odd about his choice of words and mannerisms. Just some kind of indication that the two neighbors are going to have a dispute with each other sooner rather than later. Then again he makes a good point in one scene- if your trees or bushes are hanging over the fence and into your neighbors yard, and your neighbor feels the need to trim the tree or bush, and you happen to have a problem with them taking action... wouldn't you have no choice but to place blame on yourself? However, the kind of fragile relationship the two neighbors have in this movie goes WAY beyond simple trees and bushes. This is just pure anger and special hatred. You know, it's "special" because these two neighbors have a distinct eye-twitchingly kind of hatred toward each other. I'm not so sure the final scene makes sense though. Without spoiling the conclusion... wouldn't the police department be more inclined to side with one of their own partners instead of a strange man holding a gun and calling the shots? This goes for any workplace, not just the police department- you'd side with the people you know, NOT some complete stranger holding a gun. At least, I would. Then again, I've never been put in a situation that Samuel L. Jackson's character and his neighbor were in, but the fact remains the police department weren't aware of the rocky relationship between the two neighbors. Overall, this is how action movies should ALWAYS be- exciting, unpredictable, and just adrenaline-rushing from beginning to end.

this movie makes you want to know who your neighbors are before you buy a house. very suspenceful.

Let's keep this short ,1992s unlawful entry with Kurt Russel and Ray Liotta was a better film

Any movie with Martin Lawrence has got to be funny. And this was another one of those movies. I really enjoyed it.

As usual Martin Lawrence also manages to have humor in his movies. This movie was funny, however, not what would really happen in reality. It was a ok.

As previously mentioned, the "Pitch by Pitch" in the subtitle of this book is no lie. Hernandez dissects entire at-bats (not every at-bat, thankfully) and other parts of two regular season games from 1993 involving the Phillies and Braves and the Tigers and Yankees. His preference for National League baseball is evident. Still, he doesn't let this deter him from enjoying the AL game. The good part about this book: It's very descriptive. The bad part about this book: It's very descriptive. Keith's insights are great and I did learn a fair amount from reading this book. That said, he spends too much time breaking down certain plays. Seven pages on the hit-and-run? Four pages on the pickoff? Way too long. Even I don't love baseball that much. Also, he goes way overboard with his use of exclamation points. It seemed like there was five or six in every paragraph. Overall, I mildly recommend this book. I wouldn't pay full price for it, but it's worth a read.

Easily the best baseball education in print that I've ever seen. It's like taking a master's course in baseball. You have an opportunity to almost sit down with a major leaguer and say "Teach Me" and he does. Keith has a bit of a weakness as far as pitch sequencing and understanding missed spots, but they are not particularly glaring. His understanding of counts, and situations outside of the count (inning, score, particular players involved etc..) are exemplary. Any serious ballplayer's dream.

It takes time and patience to read this book. The title says "Pitch by Pitch for the Advanced Fan," and it means it literally. Hernandez talks about what goes through a player's mind during a game. His descriptions of how a batter thinks about an at-bat are priceless. It takes a while to plow through all this stuff - there's a *lot* of detail - but if you do you'll have a deeper knowledge of the little in-game strategies and decisions that make baseball so special.

If ever there was a necessary baseball book, this is it!! I reread it every season (as does at least one other reviewer) and always learn something more from doing so.I have taken Mr. Hernandez' advice and always turn off the sound when watching a game on TV. I find it to be a major improvement and I'm no longer distracted by the content-free, pointless remarks made by most announcers.Frankly, judging from the mental errors common to the game today, it should be required reading for each and every player from the rookie leagues to the bigs.If you're not a serious student of the game, then maybe you should pass on this one!!

I'm a huge baseball fanatic and I *love* reading detailed analysis of baseball strategy and tactics. But even this book was too tedious for me. And I've almost never read a baseball book that I found too tedious. Hernandez, although very knowledgeable, dwells too much on each pitch. The reader might think the title is a metaphor for detailed analysis (pitch by pitch). No, it means *exactly* what it says. Hernandez discusses EACH pitch. At first the analysis is interesting. Then you realize you're a third of the way through the book and he's *still* talking about whether the next pitch will be a curve or a slider, or whether this particular left-handed hitter should be thrown a change-up, or whether the pitcher should challenge the batter with his superior fastball, or whether the pitch should be low, or high, or out of the strikezone. Enough already! As far as baseball strategy goes, this book is 90% about pitch selection and batter analysis. There is not too much discussion of the other elements of baseball. Tim McCarver's book, "Baseball For Brain Surgeons" is much better. So, if you're looking for a wider variety of baseball discussion, I'd recommend you look elsewhere. But if you're mostly interested in the cat-and-mouse game between the pitcher and batter, this is the book for you - because that's what 90% if this book is about.
