Hockey is any of a family of sports in which two teams compete by trying to maneuver a ball, or a hard, round, rubber or heavy plastic disc called a puck, into the opponent's net or goal, using a hockey stick.
Ice hockey is played on a large flat area of ice, using a three inch (76.2 mm) diameter vulcanized rubber disc called a puck. This puck is often frozen before high-level games to decrease the amount of bouncing and friction on the ice. The game is contested between two teams of skaters. The game is played all over North America, Europe and in many other countries around the world to varying extent. It is the most popular sport in Canada, Finland, the Czech Republic, and in Sweden.
The governing body is the 64-member International Ice Hockey Federation, (IIHF). Men's ice hockey has been played at the Winter Olympics since 1924, and was in the 1920 Summer Olympics. Women's ice hockey was added to the Winter Olympics in 1998. North America's National Hockey League (NHL) is the strongest professional ice hockey league, drawing top ice hockey players from around the globe. The NHL rules are slightly different from those used in Olympic ice hockey: the periods are 20 minutes long, counting downwards. There are three periods.
Ice hockey sticks are long L-shaped sticks made of wood, graphite, or composites with a blade at the bottom that can lie flat on the playing surface when the stick is held upright and can curve either way, legally, as to help a left- or right-handed player gain an advantage.
There are early representations and reports of ice hockey-type games being played on ice in the Netherlands, and reports from Canada from the beginning of the nineteenth century, but the modern game was initially organized by students at McGill University, Montreal in 1875 who, by two years later, codified the first set of ice hockey rules and organized the first teams.
Ice hockey is played at a number of levels, by all ages.

Nhl Vintage Chicago Blackhawks Neon Clock - 14 Inch DiameterReviewsThis review was written for the same clock but it had a United States Marine logo graphic behind it. Unbeatable Sale have seemingly removed the USMC version from amazon.com since I posted the original review. When this clock arrived it was damaged; the second hand had fallen off inside the clock and the neon holders were broken. Now ordinarily I would exclude such shipping damage info from an amazon review, as it's not really pertinent to the actual item. But since this was for an imminent birthday I decided to fix it rather than return it and this gave me an opportunity to see the construction and clock innards for myself. Now as an object d'art item this clock looks okay - it's big and the silver chrome plastic outer looks metallic although it's not. The two outer powered neon tubes (inside is white, outside is red) are bright and uniform and the print on the USMC logo is clear. The clock itself is standard fare for low priced clocks - a single AA battery powers it and it's the kind of small clock mechanism you could buy for $5 at any craft store. I'm sure it'll keep time for years though. The construction however is VERY cheap - a crude wooden shim holds the power inlet from the power block and it was very poorly put together. Hot glue was holding the neon clips on which would explain their failure, and a poor soldering job held together with electrical tape juiced the two neons, with the wiring just shoved in there. The USMC was a cardboard print not even lacquered or sealed - could've been done on a $50 inkjet printer probably. So ultimately I fixed the clock and on the surface it looks fine but for a near $100 item I was expecting considerably better craftsmanship and really can't recommend based on its price. It's a shame as had the clock cost under $50 I would've been more than happy with it. Average Rating:![]() |

NHL's Greatest Goals (Vintage Hockey Collection)ReviewsBought as a gift for my husband. He truly loved this one! A must have for any hockey fan's collection. He ranked this video higher than the NHL Greatest Moments. This is a great video for young hockey players to watch. We have a 25 minute drive to our rink so we pop this in the DVD player in the van and the 5 boys love it. It makes the drive a little easier. My son is a hockey fanatic at the ripe, old age of 1. I got this video because of all the rave reviews - but have been dissapointed. THere are too many breaks in the hockey clips to hold my sons attention very well. It has more talking than i waslead to believe and while the quality of the goals is as promised - the format is lacking. It is the excellent DVD with great goals. Pros. 1) Every goal is repeated a few times from different points of view. 2) Great comments from best players. However, not too many, not boring at all. 3) Goals are nicely sorted by groups. I especially like that with spin-o-ramas. Hope they will continue this tradition. 4) Fair price. Cons. 1) Pretty short movie (46 minutes, even less if you remove all titles). 2) 3:4, not a wide screen. The picture quality is good enough though. In spite of some disadvantages, the movie is definately worth buying. I have watched it 4 or 5 times already. I watched it even with my friends who do not like ice hockey as much as we do. My middle son, 7 years old player, love the movie and watched it more than his favourite cartoons. It is hard to imagine, but it is true. Finally, he does not like so much some other disks we have (like Stanley Cup's collections). Moreover, my older kid does not like any sports though he likes this movie! It is the best disk we have from NHL. It deserves 5 starts for sure. You would think that the nhl would be able to put out something better than this piece or work. The "hosts" are corny and their segments are worthless. The goals themselves are pretty good, but the most recent only go up to about 1995. So don't expect any of the recent great goals that have been scored in the NHL. Overall I would only recommend this product to fans who have followed hockey for 15 or 20 years. Average Rating:![]() |

NHL's Masked Men - The Last Line of Defense (Vintage Hockey Collection)ReviewsGave this to a friend who is a Ice and Roller Hockey Goalie. He loved it. Lots if little tidbits about the quirks of each goalie they talked about. I bought this for my son, who became a goalie because of Roy. While we miss seing him play live, this video is the next-best thing. Very poor summary of NHL's best goalies. Most of the video clips were of the crowd. Don't waste your money on this DVD. This is pretty good for a DVD. Not too long. Covers several masked men, though not current. Probably all before 1995. It is worth it. I've been waiting for this DVD for a long time. My old VHS copy is almost worn out! Being a goalie myself I'm a little biased, but it doesn't get better than this. The goalies they chose at the time are perfect, and it's even cool to see how they've progressed over the years. I also think that it has just the right amount of action and back story for each goaltender. All in all a great buy, and if you love hockey you can't go wrong. I watch before all my games to get pumped up! Average Rating:![]() |

When the game is on the line, it all comes down to the men behind the mask. The backbone of all great teams, at times the only player who stands between victory and defeat, the NHL goalie takes the punishment while the leading scorers get the glory... |

NHL Overtime - Heroes and Drama of the Stanley Cup Playoffs (Vintage Hockey Collection)ReviewsI would really give it 3 to 3.5 stars but didn't want to bring it down too much. It was pretty good overall. It has a detailed story of Wayne, and Messier (both ironically don't really occur in overtime but are in the playoffs) and then there is a montage of historical playoff overtime goals. I was expecting a little bit more focus on specific players and events with a less in depth detail. Almost a third of the video is about Montréal's cup run of 1993. Great info, but could have and should have been cut way down; the same thing about a devil team making a run at the playoffs. Both were near the end and while I appreciate the historical aspect of the clips, they were just way too long only an hour video. I was expecting shorter pieces including bigger names. Overall ok, but there are definitely better ones out there. C+ You are not going to "wow" anyone into becoming a hockey fan with this video. I thought this video was awesome, Overtime goals are the most exciting play in hockey and this video was an hour of watching them. I loved it I love this video, especially the king's come from behind win over the oilers. very inspirational for all of you kid hockey players out there. Please get it! Average Rating:![]() |

Grapes:: A Vintage View of HockeyReviewsI haven't read the book...it was a gift but by their reaction...it must be pretty good if you're a Bruins fan!! :) Love him or hate him, (and there's no other choice with Grapes!), Don Cherry is a part of every hockey fan's life at one point or another, whether via CBC's Coach's Corner or his playoff appearances on American networks every spring. Inevitably the question is asked: Who is this guy, and why do we have to listen to him?!? This book is the answer. While it's no War and Peace, it's much meatier than most of the glorified pamphlets that athletes put out and call books. Written in a semi-linear stream of counsciousness style that would cause Hunter Thompson to give a knowing nod, "Grapes" gives just the right amount of dry fact, combined with juicy conjecture, to merit turning the page and find out what happens next. Priceless stories about minor league hockey abound, many of them about Eddie Shore, a name recognizable to anyone who's ever paid attention while watching the movie "Slap Shot". This book is a primer for any hockey fan who wants to understand our game from the ground up. There are of course Bobby Orr stories as well, but the post-Bruins days provide story fodder as well. I never gave a thought to the day-to-day operations of most hockey teams, let alone the late, lamented Colorado Rockies, but this book made it interesting, laughable, and ultimately pathetic. "Grapes" was written before Mr. Cherry became an icon, when he was just a glimmer in the eye of the CDC production staff. It's nice to see that his attitude as displayed on Hockey Night in Canada is not a manufactured affectation, but that he's always been exactly who he is. Mr. Cherry comes off as opinionated, stubborn, gruff, irritating, and loveable all at once, exactly as he still does every Saturday night during hockey season. I would recommend this book for any sports fan, let alone anyone with an interest in hockey. I get the feeling it could have been better. It was nice when it came out, as it was nee- ded but an updated version is badly needed. Didn't Red Auerbach, Celtics great write books up into his eighties? Well, 'Grapes' is "only" 73. Come on, Grapes, write another one about your Hockey dominated life, pls. And get Ron MacLean's help. I wanna hear about those Ladas in Montreal as cabs at the airport! For a hockey read, this is pretty good. However, for a truly 5-star book, "Thin Ice - A Season in Hell with the New York Rangers" truly puts this one to shame. Although I love Don Cherry, after reading this book, I have to admit that when I was finished with it, I came to the conclusion that alot of the problems that he's incurred in his life seem to be self-inflicted. . yet he seems to want to possibly deflect them off as being always the blame of someone else. In alot of the cases that's true, but in some instances, I cant agree. I will say this though, after reading his book, I can understand Don's devotion to his past wife Rose; she truly must have been a wonderful person. An ok book by the "don" of Canadien hockey. He tells some wonderful stories, but not enough of them. The worst part about the book is that he skips around a lot. His thoughts seem disjointed and he tends to not tie things together at times. Searching for Bobby OrrReviewsOnly Ken Dryden's "The Game" rivals this one, in my mind, for hockey writing excellence. Though, at only 42, I am too young to remember seeing the greatest defenseman ever play the game, I do recall his retirement ceremony at the old Boston Garden, when grown men cried at the sight of Bobby Orr in a suit instead of on skates. Just as Bill Russell is a Boston legend I never had the opportunity to see perform, Bobby Orr will forever live in my memory as the thoughtful and highly intelligent, youngish looking man who is deloved by New Englanders for all he had done. Highly recommended for all sports fans! Most of the information in this book is and has been published before. Bobby Orr did not support the writing of this book. His life as the greatest hockey player in history is not depicted by this author. Growing up on the South Shore of Boston in the 1970s as I did, I was whirled into the Bobby Orr-driven hockey mania that swept the region. I was born in 1971, between the two Bruins' Stanley Cup championships and before I knew it I was on skates in many of the new rinks that were built simply because of the excitement Orr brought to the area for the sport of hockey. Brunt's treatment of Orr is thoughtful, if somewhat hyperbolic. But then, this is Bobby Orr of whom we are speaking. His name is up there with Howe, Gretzky, Lemieux. He stood above all in his time. The defenseman's undeniable place in hockey history when matched with the author's borderline grandiose style inevitably leads to overstatement. The gamble that the author took, though, is what makes the book interesting. It does not have the Orr stamp of approval. Number Four met with the author and discussed the project, ultimately distancing himself from it, and asking the author to avoid direct contact with his family. By following through with the book, Brunt seemingly gambled away his chance at future work with Orr. Was a bridge burned? For hockey fans, from Parry Sound to Oshawa to Boston, the book brings back memories of players long gone, of the rock 'em, sock 'em style of the 1970s and the exponential growth of the sport from the original six to regular global interaction. If there is a major drawback, it's that the machinations of Orr's longtime agent Alan Eagleson are not thoroughly and definitively spelled out. Hints are dropped and the 1998 trial is covered, but just how deeply he scarred the players of the National Hockey League is understated. After reading the book, I guess I'll be going elsewhere for more details. Being brought up in Detroit I knew of Hockey but that was it. I went to a few games as a child with Grandpa but everyone jumped up and I couldn't see anything. Now retired and with a wife that was a hockey fan I decided a few years ago to try watching the game. Low and behold a instant fan. This book did more for me that anything else in explaining the game and the names I had heard but really did not know. The sad side is like so many sports and jobs the management or agents or lawyers use and abuse their help. I enjoyed the book and it has certainly brought my knowledge of the sport and the game up. Go Red Wings. If you like Hockey and grew up during the time of the legend Bobby Orr playing against the Canadians, the Maple Leafs, the Blackhawks and others this book is well worth the read. I enjoyed the book and will pass it on to others to enjoy as well. Average Rating:![]() |
